The Young City Laureate Scheme was set up in 2012 by South West Literature Development Agency, Cyprus Well, to nurture and develop the best young writing talent in the region.
The scheme is open to young people aged 16-19 who have a passion for writing, whether it's prose, poetry or plays. YCLs are selected through open competitions; young people are asked to write something inspired by their home town. A team of expert judges will then choose the piece of writing they think best reflects true writing talent and a passion for their city.
Each YCL will hold the position for a year, during which time they will be asked to write and perform their written work at events in libraries, schools, and festivals across their city. The scheme also includes a mentoring programme with support from local councils, Cyprus Well, and other arts organisations.
